Ohio River Fishing Report June 30, 2009

Right now at Cannelton Dam the river stage is 12.8' below the dam and is expected to fall to 11.6' by July 3rd. Down river to Newburgh Dam it is 15.5' below and is expected to fall to 13.8' by July 3rd. Near Uniontown Ky at J.T. Myers Dam it is currently 16.8' below the dam and is expected to fall to 14.8' by July 3rd.

I had a successful day with 4 fisherman Saturday and they caught 20+ catfish, mostly channel cats with several in the 8 lb range. The river is full of channel catfish this yr and they are providing a lot of fun for anglers. They're not so bad in the frying pan either. Shad guts, cut shad and G & S cheesebait on dipping worms are the baits that have been working the best lately. The majority of Blue Catfish are finished spawning and should be hungry from fighting and not eating. Cut Shad and Skipjack Herring are preferred baits here on the Ohio River for Blues.

Over the weekend the river took on a couple of feet rise from heavy rains upriver and is now falling rapidly. The rapid falling conditions makes for difficulty patterning most fish but, white bass can still be caught near sand bars, humps and rock ledges near heavy current. Monday, while the river fell a foot over night, a friend and I caught 2 limits (60) of White Bass. In-line spinners and jigs (custom made) were the baits of choice. These fish will soon start their summer schooling patterns and will be seen in "jumps" busting shad and minnow's.
